Drives

From HelpDeskWiki

There are a large number of problems related to drives, especially hard drives. You may have trouble with:

  • Failure
  • Data corruption
  • Flakiness
  • Noise
  • Lost files

In late 2003, a number of hard drive manufacturers nearly-simultaneously announced that they would reduce their warranty periods from 3 years to 1 year. In HelpDesk's opinion, this is little more than an excuse to duck responsibility for shoddy hardware, and to lower the quality of new hardware, and to make new customers of "high-end" drives think they're getting top quality when in fact it used to be considered standard quality. At least one brand of hard drives seem to have in-warranty failure rates nearing 100%. The fact that the replacement drives, which are generally remanufactured (i.e., supposedly repaired), suffer the same failure rates is less than promising, to put it mildly. HelpDesk is going to decline to name names, simply because every manufacturer seems to have problems at some time or other.
